SASSA Old Age grant is a pension program for those non-government employees who still need financial support in their old age. This is a grant payment that is awarded to those who are older than 60 years and can not earn basic living expenses.

All South African permanent citizens, refugees, and asylum seekers can apply for this grant. However, SASSA will use the means test to pass the applicants for this old-age pension grant. The means test will verify the assets and income threshold of the applicants.

How Do I Apply for the SASSA Older Persons Grant?

Applicants can use the two methods to apply for the SASSA Older Persons grant. Either they can use the online portal to submit the grant application or visit the SASSA office to complete their Old Age grant registration in person.

Please note that, if an applicant is very sick or can not walk to the office, they can send family members to apply. However, they must provide medical proof claiming they can not visit the office due to their health conditions.

What Documents Do I Need?

Applicants are advised to prepare the required documents before they visit the SASSA office. If you are not aware of the papers then here are the details:

  • Original South African barcode 13-digit ID card. If you do not have an ID then SASSA will provide you with an affidavit or sworn statement to verify your identity.
  • Spousal relationship proof (if applicable).
  • Divorced order from court (if applicable).
  • A complete scan of your fingerprints at the SASSA office.
  • Proof of postal address (a utility bill etc).
  • If you are the owner of any property or assets then provide the details.
  • If you are receiving a pension then provide your pension slip.
  • Bank statement of last three months.

When Will My Old Age Pension Grant Approve?

The approval of your Old Age Pension Grant by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) can take up to 90 days from the date of application. Who is Eligible for the SASSA Older Persons Pension Grant?

Every single applicant has to pass the means test and then comply with these rules:

  • Should have a South African nationality or residence.
  • Must be living in South Africa.
  • Should be older than 60 years old.
  • Should not be getting any other social or SASSA grants.
  • Should not be living in the care of state institutions.
  • Must pass the means test.
  • If you are single then your monthly income should be lower than 8 070 Rands.
  • If you are married then your combined income should be lower than R16140.
  • Your combined assets should not be above R2 745600.

  • Helpline: Call the SASSA Helpline at 0800 651 011 for assistance.
  • Visit a SASSA Office: You can also visit your nearest SASSA office for in-person assistance with your balance inquiry.
